Making the decision to purchase a home can be extremely emotional and stressful for even the most calm, cool, and collected folks. Nearly every step in the process has the possibility of causing unnecessary anxiety. A slight case of nerves could be a good sign because it means you are taking everything seriously.
However, if talking yourself down from a panic attack becomes a daily activity, it may be time to reflect on some of these tips from Trulia that are sure to calm your nerves.
1) It only takes one. Purchasing a home can be an extremely daunting task when you think of all the decisions that need to be made. “But here’s a soothing number you can focus on: one. You only need to find one house that fits with your family, your future and your finances.” All of your neighbors, family, and friends have pulled it off – trust me when I say, you can do it too!
2) You are the boss of you. You have the freedom to make the decisions that are best fit for you and your family. Don’t let the lender, the seller, any of the agents, etc. to make you feel bullied into a decision. Take your time, seek out advice when you’re feeling unsure, and you’re much more likely to feel comfortable with the whole process.
3) Speaking up pays off. This is where the old lesson from grade school comes into play, “there is no such thing as a stupid question.” Especially if you are a first time home buyer, your agent or lender may forget that a term or acronym that is commonplace to them may be a foreign language to you. Save yourself the confusion and speak up!
4) Almost no transaction goes precisely as planned. Wouldn’t it be nice if the buyers, sellers, buyer’s agent, listing agent, lender, home inspector, and settlement agent were all on the same page for every step of the process? Unfortunately, things are occasionally lost in translation, one party is less responsive than the rest would like, etc. Little problems may arise, but it’s important to just roll with those punches. To give you yet another analogy: if you try to fight the waves you’ll inevitably get pummeled. But if you cooperate with the waves, you’ll make it safely to shore.
If those four tips have failed to make you feel relaxed about purchasing your next home, I’m always happy to take you on a hike, go kayaking, or even take a yoga class to calm your nerves 🙂
